Loop 820 patience

I live approximately 200 yards from the Rufe Snow Drive and Northeast Loop 820 intersection. This strip of freeway has been a headache for decades and was even ranked fifth in Newsweek's worst commutes in America. As most north Tarrant County residents know, this highway is under construction, making it nearly impossible to access or beneficial to drive on. Stoplights surrounding my house are backed up for hours, and detours snake through our residential neighborhoods.

My purpose is not to complain but to ask for patience and caution during these years of construction. Recently, a drunk driver hit two police officers working a construction area on the loop. Every day, I witness drivers swerving in and out of lanes, barely avoiding accidents.

I hear the car horns from my back yard, and I understand the frustration, but I am calling on fellow commuters to restore individual responsibility. Leave your house 15 minutes early. Carpool with a neighbor. Take a back route home.

These inconvenient acts require an altruistic desire for other drivers' well-being. Rocks refined by fire become gold, and westbound Northeast Loop 820 will someday be the wide-open lanes of asphalt we dream of.
