A USA Today article on Nov. 26 stated, "Gun purchases soared 74 percent since 2006, while gun-related violent crimes fell 24 percent, according to Virgina Commonwealth University professor Thomas R. Baker's analysis"

Who saw that coming? Apparently, guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens may actually be a deterrent to criminals. As to the comparison to texting while driving, I'm 64 years old and drive around 50,000 miles a year. I keep a legal weapon and maintain my proficiency in its use. I have never been shot at in this country. However, two or three times a week I have to dodge some nincompoop who is off in some other world, texting away on his or her smart phone while driving.

The message here is clear. Texting while driving is stupid. Responsible gun ownership is not.
