Much has been said these days about the need for parents to get involved in their children's schooling; this brings a memory of long ago.

I started first grade in 1936. There was no kindergarten in those days; you just had to be 6 years old to start school. I went home constantly complaining to my mother, "I don't like school." She was born in 1890, could not read or write and spoke English with an accent.

One day, while I was in class, there was a knock on the door. The teacher opened the door, and it was my mother!

My mother said something to the teacher then went to the front of the class and said, "Who a here a likes a school?" Hands went up, and she said, "My Georgie don't like a school." That's all I remember.

Right or wrong by today's child psychology? I don't know. Embarrassing? I'm sure.

Parental involvement? You bet. I didn't go home again complaining, "I don't like school."
