Jack Kean was right in his Friday letter, no state law is needed against driving and texting on a cellphone. (See: "Guns and texting") After all, a large percentage of drivers do not need government micromanaging. These drivers display their common sense and intelligence every time they drive and use a cellphone.

Forget the statistics on every reputable website that conclusively prove that driving and texting or talking on a handheld cellphone cause more accidents and deaths than any other one act involving a motor vehicle. After all, we can depend on these responsible drivers to carry on those conversations or compose and send those text messages while safely operating a motor vehicle with one hand.

I would suggest taking a few trips on our highways to see the reality of the situation and why a state law with stiff penalties is needed banning the use of a handheld cellphone for any purpose.
