Colleyville Covenant falls to Frisco Legacy

BEDFORD -- Time ran out on Colleyville Covenant's dream of an undefeated season and a TAPPS Division 3 state title Friday night as Frisco Legacy held off a furious late rally to claim a 21-16 semifinal win at Pennington Field.

The dream died for the Cougars (12-1) when running back Micah Lutz was stopped for no gain on a fourth-and-3 play at the Legacy 40 with 1:30 remaining. The Eagles (11-2) were able to run out the clock and claim a spot in the championship game against the Hallettsville Sacred Heart/Shiner St. Paul winner next weekend at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco.

Covenant led early on a 38-yard field goal by Brooks Friedman but played catch-up most of the night. Behind 2,000-yard rusher Ovie Urevbu, Legacy took a 7-3 halftime lead on a 13-play, 83-yard drive.

The Eagles stretched the lead to 14-3 on the opening drive of the second half when quarterback Adam Beck connected with Christian Hollowell on a 23-yard touchdown pass.

Covenant, slowed by turnovers and missed opportunities throughout the first half, finally started to turn the tide just before the end of the third period. Trey Jackson picked up a Urevbu fumble at the Legacy 18, then caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Kade Thomas to cut the lead to 14-9.

But on fourth-and-6 at the Covenant 21, Urevbu caught a swing pass from Beck and scored to stretch the lead to 21-9 with only eight minutes left.

A 39-yard pass to Jackson helped Covenant move quickly again down the field and Lutz scored on a 4-yard run with 6:42 to play.
