Cody Thomas took notice as one former Texas high school quarterback after another had his name called at the 2012 NFL Draft.

The Colleyville Heritage star quarterback also noted how many inexperienced NFL signal-callers are getting a chance to play this season.

Like many young athletes, Thomas dreams of one day turning his passion for sports into a career. Yet not many young athletes are blessed with his talent.

At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds with a golden arm, the Oklahoma recruit routinely chews up defenses on Friday nights. After passing for almost 3,500 yards and 36 touchdowns as a junior, he became one of the most sought-after recruits in the country. He's also one of the nation's top baseball prospects, batting .415 with 29 RBIs and 21 extra-base hits as an outfielder last season.

"Cody Thomas is a guy I think Oklahoma always liked a lot," said Josh McCuistion, co-publisher/editor of SoonerScoop.com of Rivals.com. "I think the concern always was if they were going to be able to keep him from baseball and, frankly, Oklahoma very rarely gets serious about a guy with major-league potential.

"With Cody, I think they just thought he was too good to pass up."

Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon -- they all competed for Thomas. He narrowed his list to LSU, Auburn, Florida and Texas Tech before Oklahoma jumped into the fray.

"Once I had gotten all of the offers that I was pretty much going to get, the only one team that I didn't have, that I really wanted, was OU," Thomas said. "When I got that, they jumped to the top. I went and visited and soon after that I committed."

Thomas said he believes Oklahoma gives him the best opportunity at attaining his ultimate goal of one day playing on Sundays.

Though many prognosticators have him being selected in the early rounds of the MLB draft, Thomas said he expects to play both sports for the Sooners.

"I based my decision on football, because that's where I'm getting my scholarship from," Thomas said. "My life is wrapped around sports. I love it. I love what I do and I don't want to change anything about it. It is definitely going to be a challenge but nothing I can't take on."

No matter which route Thomas chooses, his future is bright, but the Sooners are banking on him playing in crimson one day.

"I think there's as much anticipation about him as there is with anybody in the class," McCuistion said. "There are some striking similarities between him and Sam Bradford, a guy I had the opportunity to cover in high school. From the way they carry themselves, to some of the things they do on the football field, and Sam was an all-state basketball player while Cody is obviously a great baseball player.

"I don't think that's lost on Oklahoma, and they think he has the chance to be a really special guy."
