Arlington beats Abilene Cooper in football playoffs

A

Connor Huffman threw for a career-best 307 yards to lead the Arlington Colts to a 27-20 victory over Abilene Cooper in their Class 5A Region I Division II area round matchup Friday at Maverick Stadium.

The win advanced the Colts (10-2) to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2009, where they await the winner of Saturday’s Cedar Hill and Denton Ryan contest.

Huffman threw a 19-yard strike to Dontha Robinson with 3:51 remaining to give Arlington the lead for good after the Cougars (9-3) rallied to tie the game at 20-20 on their previous possession. The Colts’ defense, led by star linebacker Sammy Douglas, stopped Cooper on downs to end the game on the ensuing drive.
