In 1948, I was a freshman at Texas Tech. One day about 5 p.m., it was bright and clear. Shortly, a dust storm rolled in. The campus and streets became as black as night, and the campus lighted up appropriately, as did the businesses across the street from the campus.

Because it was night, I went to bed. When I woke up, the day was bright again, and I discovered that it was only an hour or so after the dust storm.

After my parents moved to Lubbock, a dust storm came late in the evening, causing it to be black as night again. We could not see the porch lights across the street.

Tech played a team in New Mexico and a dust storm rolled in. The announcer said, "Stand up, you Texans. Your state is passing in review."
