Not envy, greed

Cherita Goodman's Nov. 17 letter labeling Obama supporters as the "envy society" implies that the rich contribute far more to the well-being of our society and economy than the rest of us and, therefore, they deserve to be protected and pampered like a rock star lest they take their billions and fly away.

Don't worry. Most of them took their billions out of the bird feeder at the get-go and stashed it in off-shore accounts or created other schemes to avoid taxes. They learned all the tricks of protecting their feeder in Greed 101.

In Greed 201, some of the most egregious rich learned they can use their extra millions to buy politicians, rig elections, pollute prolifically and ignore employees' safety.

In Advanced Greed 301, some learned that only their rights matter. Nothing comes off the table that brings them more wealth.

Squirrels like me are not envious of the indulgences of the rich. Spending with abandon is at least good for the economy. And who doesn't like a glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous?

My issue with the rich is when they start believing they should be the only birds at the feeder.
