Don Martin's Nov. 15 letter, "On the fringe," said compromise was at the core of our country's founding.
Our founding was an armed revolution against an ever-intrusive government -- the antithesis of compromise.Usually, the loudest in calling for compromise, the progressives, intend that those supporting limited government should do the compromising, not them. Our founders correctly established the true principle that the individual is the sovereign entity it is the function of government to protect.Over time, the progressives are deliberately, little by little, through compromise, transforming that principle to a point where the individual will become a mere agent of the state. There is a time and place for legitimate compromise. But there is also a time and place to stand your ground and promote the true principle. Our forefathers left England and eventually fought and died to establish a limited government supporting the cause of individual freedom. They took a stand and said no to compromise for more and more government control.Even though the letter's argument would place the founders "out on the lunatic fringe," it is they who established the most successful and principled country the word has ever known.-- Gary Hancock,ArlingtonHave more to add?
