The majority of letters published in the opinion section of the Star-Telegram bash Republicans and everything they stand for. The letters are ugly, deceitful, angry, bitter and divisive. I would like to see a return to civility.

It is OK to disagree with one another. That is the beauty of living in the United States. But the constant nasty commentary is not necessary to make a point. I am a Republican. I believe in God. I believe life begins at conception. I believe in a good education system. I believe that a hand up should accompany a hand out.

Contrary to popular misconception, Republicans are not rich, stingy, greedy people cheating and stepping on others. Most do care for and help their fellow man. They make large charitable contributions. They donate many hours of volunteer service. Republicans believe in individual rights and responsibilities.

I do not understand what is wrong with any of that. A return to good discussion and debate, and a retreat from ugly accusation would benefit us all.
