A man is dead and another is in custody following a verbal dispute at an Arlington apartment complex that erupted into gunfire, police said.

The shooting occurred about 1:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon in the 500 block of Ridings Place at the Countrywood apartment complex located right off E. Lamar Boulevard and east of N. Cooper Street.

Arlington police Sgt. Christopher Cook said the victim, believed to be in his early 20s, had gone to the apartments to see his ex-girlfriend and their two children, who were at the complex visiting family.

"When he arrived on scene, there was a new boyfriend there," Cook said.

Cook said the victim and new boyfriend became involved in a verbal dispute inside the apartment before separating.

"The victim actually left the apartment and the suspect stayed inside but then he retrieved a firearm and came outside and shot the victim multiple times," Cook said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect fled with the firearm in a car after the shooting but was later taken into custody after he returned to the scene. On Friday, police identified him as Artis Leon Polk Jr., and said he was in the Arlington Jail on a murder charge, with bond set at $10,000.

"Thanksgiving is a time of year when family and friends get together," Cook said. "It's a very unfortunate, senseless act of violence here between the two men. Our heart just goes out to their family."
