Rude awakening

I dreamed the 2016 election had concluded and it was more civil, fairer, more devoid of hatred, less divisive than in 2012.

That the selfish efforts to disenfranchise many voters -- through mean-spirited moves that amounted to a modern-day poll tax -- had been set aside, replaced by successful efforts to encourage voting.

That the billions of campaign dollars had been reduced to a lesser sum, and that the extra money had gone to helping the needy.

That the exhausting, psyche-rattling four years of campaigning had been reduced to a more productive four months.

That the attack dogs of fear, hate and anger were limited to harmless barking, so that critical issue discussions were better heard while demonization of the other side remained in some sort of dog-run for the neutered.

That those who ended their campaign speeches by asking God to bless America also reminded that He always has, that God has proffered it in perpetuity if we will but take the steps to let that happen.

But, alas, I awoke from my 2016 dream to the nightmarish realization that none of this had occurred.

For we won't make it happen.

Or will we?
