In response to the Nov. 14 editorial, "Feral cat program comes in through the back door," we would have to disagree with the Star-Telegram's opinion.

Instead, what you witnessed was a quintessential example of the democratic process in action: elected officials responding to the expressed will of the electorate. In this instance, it came in the form of a compromise: a decision reached with mutual consent.

Unfortunately, all perceived (or real) nuisances cannot be addressed by an ordinance. For example, consider the possible public response if the phrase "feral cat" were replaced by "handgun" in the ordinance in question. It is likely that two sides would also form on the sides of this question, and a compromise would then be sought.

Not of equal impact or import, you might say. But when was the last time the Star-Telegram ran the headline, "Man slain by feral cat"?
