A young woman and her estranged boyfriend were found dead in her Arlington apartment Tuesday morning in an apparent murder-suicide, Arlington police said.

The names of the woman and the man had not been released.

Responding to a call for a welfare check, Arlington police found the woman dead in her apartment, said Arlington police Sgt. Christopher Cook in a telephone interview. The man was found in another room of the apartment.

Investigators believe a handgun was used.

Officers responded to the call at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 2700 block of Medicine Pass at the Indian Creek Apartments in southeast Arlington.

"Relatives called police because the woman was supposed to get off work last night and then pick up her young child," Cook said. "She never showed up and that's when relatives became concerned."

Police arrived to find blood outside of the woman's apartment, Cook said. Officers kicked open the door and found the woman and man inside.

Police declined to release other details.

Investigators do not believe anyone else was involved in the shootings, Cook said.

Authorities continued Tuesday to interview relatives and neighbors of the young woman.
