WICHITA FALLS -- Three first-quarter Springtown turnovers put the Porcupines in a 21-0 hole, and Vernon later pulled away for a 55-28 victory at Memorial Stadium in a Class 3A Division II bi-district game.
Springtown (6-5) battled back to trail 28-14 at halftime, but the Porcupines didn't get any closer than two touchdowns. The Lions will face Gatesville in the area round.
Vernon (9-2) collected five turnovers and cashed three into touchdowns. A fumble recovery put Vernon at the Springtown 5, just 56 seconds into the game.
A play later, Robert Thomas' run into the end zone gave the Lions an early 7-0 lead.
Orlando Haymon rumbled in for a touchdown with 8:04 still left in the first quarter for a 14-0 Vernon lead.
Springtown quarterback Landry Turner threw his second interception in the second quarter to set up a 79-yard scoring drive. Brandon Urquizo's keeper made it 21-0.
Colby Moore broke free on a 23-yard quarterback draw on fourth down to put Springtown on the board, but Vernon still led 21-7.
After Vernon made it 28-7, Springtown's Tyler Robertson finished a 90-yard scoring drive with a TD run to cut it to 28-14.
