Fourth-down TD pass gives Colleyville Covenant Christian edge over Muenster Sacred Heart 14-7

A

BEDFORD -- Tanner Rogers took a fourth-down pass 74 yards for what proved to be the winning score, and then Chris Shurtleff's goal-line interception with 20 seconds remaining sealed it as Colleyville Covenant Christian stayed undefeated, beating Muenster Sacred Heart 14-7 Friday in a TAPPS Division III playoff game at Pennington Field.

Covenant (11-0) meets Lubbock Christian or Dallas First Baptist next.

The Cougars faced fourth-and-4 with just over six minutes remaining in regulation and the scored tied 7-7, and Covenant coach Barry Morgan saw an opportunity for his team to make a gamble. "Our quarterback [Kade Thomas] suggested it. They were playing us soft all night."

Thomas, in Covenant's unique punt formation, hit Rogers with one blocker in front. The 4-yard pass became a score as Rogers sprinted untouched the final 70 yards.

All of the scoring came in the second half. Covenant's potent passing game mostly was sidelined by Sacred Heart dominating the time of possession in the first half, but the Cougars then marched 68 yards in eight plays on their first drive of the second half, capped by Austin Troup's 3-yard touchdown plunge to make it 7-0.

Sacred Heart (7-4) countered as Hayden Schilling's 38-yard interception return set up a 27-yard touchdown pass to Isac Walterscheid from Kason Reeves. Walterscheid's diving catch in the end zone tied the score at 7-7 with 5:14 left in the third quarter.
