HEWITT -- A year after reaching the Class 3A Division I state title game, Alvarado's 2012 campaign came to an abrupt end with a 48-28 loss Friday to Gatesville in a Class 3A Division II Region I bi-district game at Panther Stadium.
With the score tied 28-28, Alvarado (7-4) threw consecutive incompletions on third and fourth down at the Gatesville 43.
On the next play, Gatesville (11-0) took the lead for good when Cole Edmiston hit Connor Watson for a 57-yard score with 5:11 to play in the game. Edmiston went 14 of 27 for 273 yards and five touchdowns.
Gatesville recovered an onside kick on the next play, but Alvarado stopped the Hornets with 2:10 left.
The Hornets put the game away two plays later when senior Tyler Jaynes intercepted a Kenny West pass and raced 40 yards for a score. Jaynes enjoyed a big night for the Hornets, catching three passes for 100 yards. The grabs went for scores of 35, 27 and 38 yards.
Gatesville added to its score on the ensuing kickoff when Alvarado touched the ball then failed to cover it in the end zone. The Hornets' Colin Magee fell on the loose ball for the final score of the night.
Alvarado senior running back Lee Hardy closed out his career with 32 carries for 210 yards. Gatesville will play Vernon next week in area-round play.
