I respectfully disagree with Jan Lacina's opinion about Accelerated Reader (AR) tests for students (See: "Teaching Kids the 'game' of school testing," Wednesday).
As a parent volunteer, I helped kindergarten and first-grade students take AR tests at two schools. I served as the Ridglea Hills Elementary PTA AR coordinator for two years. We encouraged students to participate in the AR program by providing incentives such as buttons with level ribbons and offering prizes for which they could redeem AR points. Our school library had one of the highest circulations in the district.I witnessed firsthand how the AR program encouraged students to love reading.Almost every book in the library had an AR test.Older students were challenged to read more-difficult books because they could earn more points.I'm sure most parents would agree with me that their children are better readers because they participated in the AR program.-- Lori Kimball, Fort WorthHave more to add?
