FORT WORTH -- A 75-year-old woman died early Wednesday after she was pulled unconscious from a house fire in south Fort Worth, the Tarrant County medical examiner's office reported.

The victim was identified as Maritta Brown, who was pronounced dead about 3:30 a.m. in the emergency room of John Peter Smith Hospital.

An autopsy will be performed.

Firefighters and MedStar personnel worked to revive the woman after she was found in the living room of the home in the 700 block of East Robert Street, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly before 1:30 a.m., finding heavy smoke and fire coming from the back of the home, fire Capt. Tom Crow said.

As firefighters entered the front of the house, Brown was found on a couch, Crow said.

No other injuries were reported, Battalion Chief Gary Lee said, but a family dog was killed.

The cause of the blaze was listed as undetermined, fire officials said. Fire officials estimated the property loss at $30,000.

Hours after the fire, a few relatives and friends sifted through the debris for any items they could salvage.

Brown had lived at the home for about three years, a relative said. She and other family members declined to comment further.
