On the fringe

I was concerned about the Nov. 8 article reporting that ultra-right-wing conservatives are demanding that mainstream Republicans adopt their rigid, no-compromise policy.

They also threatened to punish any GOP legislator who refuses to kowtow to their radicalism.

A lot of well-meaning, self-styled "patriots" seem to be unaware that our government was founded on the principle of compromise. In 1787, the giants who created America decided that all the states should have equal representation in the new government. That decision is referred to as, "The Great Compromise." They may have also forgotten that our motto, E Pluribus Unum, means "out of many, one."

However, as a traditional Republican, I hope that the ultra-right-wing groups will become even more strident and divisive. That will ensure that they will further alienate the mainstream of America and will assume their rightful place out on the lunatic fringe.
