For the past two seasons Springtown played with some of the best Class 4A teams in the area, including Aledo, Birdville and Saginaw Boswell.
"Playing the likes of those teams the past few years made us better," said Springtown coach Brad Turner, whose team was moved to Class 3A for 2012-13. "We talked about how playing those teams made us better and what we could learn from those games."
Springtown (6-4) enters Friday's bi-district game against Vernon (8-2) riding a four-game winning streak.
"We didn't play great early on, but were playing great right now," Turner said. "All the games we lost we lost in the second half. We're finally healthy and have some great senior leadership."
One of those seniors that are leading the ways is running back Tyler Robertson. He has rushed for 556 yards and two touchdowns.
"A lot of people counted us out because we won just one game a year ago," Robertson said. "We worked hard all off season to get to where we are right now. Some of the seniors knew we had to step it up and we are confident that if we win one game there is no telling how far we can go."
Another turning point in the season came against Graham, when freshman quarterback Landry Turner was promoted to the varsity. He performed well in the team's loss, and split time the last four games with Colby Moore.
"We moved Landry up and he did pretty well so we decided to keep him up there," Turner said. "Then after the Kennedale game, we started rotating them and its worked out pretty well so far so we've just continued doing it."
