The "fiscal cliff" discussions between now and Christmas will define Barack Obama's second term. Here's how he beats John Boehner and Mitch McConnell: Pitch the debate in full view of the American people.
Mr. President, you got a minute? Place a half-page ad in a dozen U.S. dailies. Explain in detail who your proposals impact and how much. Invite Rep. Boehner and Sen. McConnell to present their plan. Who would it help and hurt? Include office e-mails and phone numbers for you and them and ask the people to weigh in.Make these men commit in writing to favoring the 2 percent over the rest of us. Make them defend the Republican version of shared sacrifice: You sacrifice, I take your share. If they refuse to budge, go on TV and say so.Don't race to the middle on this one, Mr. President. Be polite and professional, but resolute. And don't fight the battle alone.Keep the people informed. Keep them engaged. It is their government, after all, and the stakes are very high. They're your best weapon here. Win or lose, it's important that they, and not you alone, own the outcome.-- John Dycus, ArlingtonHave more to add? News tip? Tell us
