Alvarado blanks Venus to make playoffs

A

ALVARADO -- The Alvarado Indians clinched the final playoff spot in District 8-3A Friday night with a 55-0 victory over the Venus Bulldogs.

Alvarado (7-3, 2-2 District 7-3A) used its ground game and senior running back Marcus McNeil to wear out the Bulldogs (7-3, 1-3). McNeil finished with 98 rushing yards to go with senior Lee Hardy's 100 yards.

Venus' triple-option finished with just two rushing yards in the first half, including eight runs that went for negative yards.

Alvarado forced a Venus three-and-out to open the game. The Indians then capped a seven-play drive with Kenny West's 18-yard touchdown pass to Jared McCarver. Hardy added touchdown runs for Alvarado on back-to-back drives, a 28-yard run and a 1-yard burst on second-and-goal.

West (four TD passes) later found Andrew Leger for a 6-yard score with 26 seconds remaining in the first half. Adrian Hendrick added a 47-yard TD run.
