Granbury blunts Arlington Heights rally to win

A

Granbury fought off a big comeback from Fort Worth Arlington Heights to win 31-27 at Farrington Field on Friday night.

Arlington Heights' Sam Mattingly recovered a fumble at the Granbury 44 with 5:02 remaining to give the Yellow Jackets an opportunity to take their first lead in the game.

But the Yellow Jackets stalled at the Pirates' 30.

The Pirates (7-3, 5-2 District 7-4A) ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Granbury took its largest lead after a 28-yard field goal by Jacob Rose to make the score 24-7 with 6:51 left in the third quarter.

But the Yellow Jackets came roaring back.

Heights' Sammy Webb scored all three of his touchdowns in the second half, with the first coming from 28 yards out to cut the deficit to 24-14 with 1:01 left in the third quarter.

The Yellow Jackets (2-8, 2-5) scored on their next drive on a 9-yard touchdown run from Webb to make the score 24-21 early in the fourth quarter.

The Pirates took the ball to the Jackets' 3-yard line, but Mattingly recovered a fumble.

One play later, the Jackets fumbled the ball in their own end zone, and Granbury's Taylor Petty recovered to score a touchdown and build the Pirates' lead to 31-21.

Heights answered after a seven-play, 75 yard drive with a 52-yard touchdown run by Webb to cut the score to 31-27 with 6:37 remaining. The extra point was missed.

The Pirates will take on Crowley at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the bi-district playoffs.
