Cowboys owner Jerry Jones tried his best to distance himself from the rumor surrounding New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton being a possible head coach in Dallas on his radio show on Tuesday.

Jones said he can't have any contact with Payton and that he knows nothing of Payton's business with the Saints or his contract situation.

Jones, however, was more convoluted when it came time to talk about the status of his own coach, Jason Garrett.

On one hand, Jones preached patience and even compared Garrett to Tom Landry and Bill Belichick, who struggled early in their careers before winning Super Bowl titles and becoming legends.

"You have to look at his short tenure and potential for the future," Jones said. "Yes I made a coaching change with a coach who only been here two years [Chan Gailey]. I regretted it. The books are full of coaches who started slow and ended up doing an outstanding job."

On the other hand, Jones said the Cowboys have talent better than their 3-5 record.

"We need to win a game," Jones said. "I looked for an uptick when Jason took over. I look for that now."

Murray update

Jerry Jones sounded optimistic Sunday about injured running back DeMarco Murray returning to the lineup for Sunday's game at Philadelphia.

He was more tempered about Murray on his radio show on KRLD/105.3 FM "The Fan" on Tuesday. Murray has missed the past three games with a sprained foot.

"We will look at him Wednesday," Jones said. "He can look good running, but he has to power off with his foot."

Staying in charge

Jerry Jones' comments to Bob Costas before Sunday's game at Atlanta caused a little stir because he said he would have fired the general manager by now if, you know, he wasn't the general manager as well as the owner.

Jones was asked again about the comments on his radio show Tuesday morning and said he was just answering a question hypothetically because the reality is that it's just not going to happen.

"No way would I be involved and not be the final decision maker on the player," Jones said. "It's just not going to happen. We have had success doing it this way. We will have success in the future doing it this way."

New linebacker

According to sources, the Cowboys are expected to sign veteran linebacker Gary Guyton on Wednesday to help shore up an injury ravaged position.

A four-year veteran, Guyton worked out for the team Tuesday and pending a physical will be added to the team. The Cowboys have only two healthy inside linebackers: Bruce Carter and Ernie Simms.

Too Tall honored

Former Cowboys great Ed "Too Tall" Jones has been selected to the Black College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2013.

The 6-foot-9 Jones played at Tennessee State from 1968-71. He played 15 seasons with the Cowboys.

Also selected are Elvin Bethea, Charles Brackins, Joe Gilliam, Jr., Ken Houston, Charlie Joiner, Larry Little, Shannon Sharpe, Jackie Slater, coach John Merritt and announcer Charlie Neal.

The inductees will be enshrined on Feb. 16.
