Cow shot in head near Rio Vista by 'road hunters,' authorities say

A cow was shot in the head Monday west of Rio Vista, "apparently by road hunters," according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

The 1,000-pound cow was found dead on County Road 1220, west of Rio Vista, with its calf nearby, officials said in a news release.

"The cow's calf was not hurt," the sheriff's office said. "Based on the state of the carcass, it is believed the offense occurred in the early morning hours of Monday."

A bullet was removed from the cow's neck, behind her skull, the statement said.

The shooting is being investigated as a case of criminal mischief.

Game wardens from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and special rangers from the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raiser's Association have been asked to help the in investigation, according to the news release.

"The loss in the offense is valued at $1,500, plus any loss of future calves," officials said in the news release.
