The recent sinking of a boat on Eagle Mountain Lake was a terrible accident that apparently cost a man his life. (See: "Man, 51, is missing after boat sinks," Tuesday)

I am dismayed that the Tarrant County Water District and the Texas game wardens who are in charge of safety on the lake had no comment or mention in the press of the obvious danger in the overloading of 12 people aboard a 26-foot boat and no mention of adequate life jackets being on board.

I have personally fished people from the lake with no life jacket when their boat sank.

Numerous reports of car and motorcycle accidents note whether the victim was wearing his seat belt or wearing a helmet, but rarely is the cause of a boating accident noted.

They are called life jackets or life preservers for a very good reason.

If you are a boater, please vow now to always wear your PFD. It is a wake-up call for all who love being on the water.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family.
