The Electoral College is one of the strongest bastions of states' rights. To do away with it would result in the presidency being controlled by the popular vote of the east coast and the west coast where the majority of people live, and nine times out of 10, that president would NOT be a Republican or a conservative. The states with the smaller populations could be safely ignored and their aspirations wiped from the national agenda.
The Electoral College system preserves the political equality of the states, regardless of size or population. So far, only Maine and Nebraska have been fool enough to not cast their votes en bloc but rather by congressional district. This has helped make them both less relevant and less powerful.-- Paul R.
