DALLAS -- O.J. Mayo became the latest member of the Dallas Mavericks to get acquainted with the injury bug.

Mayo sat out Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage at American Airlines Center with a laceration of his right palm. The injury occurred Monday when Mayo fell on some stairs while the Mavs were in Barcelona, Spain -- the day before Dallas played a preseason game against FC Barcelona Regal.

Despite the injury, Mayo played against Regal but had just one point on 0-of-7 shooting. With that in mind, coach Rick Carlisle decided not to expose Mayo to the 3,000 fans who showed up at the AAC on Saturday for the team's "Mavstoberfest.'

"His hand is bothering him a little bit, he's going to practice [today] and he should be fine," Carlisle said. "He shouldn't have played in Barcelona.

"He wanted to, but it was a mistake on my part to let him. So I just want to make sure he's right before I put him out there in front of a bunch of people."

Carlisle said he expects Mayo to play in Monday's 7:30 p.m. home preseason opener against the Houston Rockets.

"It's getting better," Carlisle said, "but he's got a big chunk out of that thing."

Guard Rodrigue Beaubois (sprained left ankle) also didn't play in Saturday's 12-minute scrimmage, which the Blue team, led by center Brandan Wright, won over the White 33-27.

Nowitzki unscathed

Dirk Nowitzki got through Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage unscathed.

Still, the Mavericks don't know if their 11-time All-Star forward has put all the swelling and soreness in his right knee behind him for good -- or if he'll have to undergo arthroscopic surgery to remedy the situation before the Oct. 30 regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers.

"In the next couple of days we'll know where we're at," Rick Carlisle said. "At this point he seems to be doing well.

"I can only comment so much because I'm not a doctor."

Brandan Wright said that he hasn't noticed anything different about Nowitzki as he tries to get his health issues back on track.

"It's preseason -- everybody's trying to get into form," Wright said. "I can't say he's a step slow or in midseason form.

"It's still the preseason, and everybody's trying to knock the kinks out. If he's healthy we'll be able to count on him when we go up against LA."

Kaman back to normal

The sprained lower back he sustained on the opening day of training camp is no longer bothering Chris Kaman.

The Mavs center proved that by scoring 29 points, collecting 16 rebounds and going 12 of 19 from the field with three blocks in 49 minutes during the first two preseason games in Berlin and Barcelona.

"Being injured is not a good thing at the beginning of camp, so it was tough going," Kaman said. "I'm just trying to figure out the flow of our offense, of our defense, figuring everything out."

Kaman believes his back injury is a thing of the past he hopes doesn't recur during the course of this season.

"I've been staying on top of my treatments and my rehab, so I'll continue to do that the rest of the year," Kaman said.

"It's going to be a long season for me but the more important thing is just trying to stay healthy for the rest of the year and for me to play as many games as I can."

Wright shines bright

Brandan Wright was one of the bright spots of the scrimmage.

Wright even had the dunk of the night when guard Dominique Jones tossed the ball off the backboard and left it for Wright, who caught it in midflight and jammed it home.

In all, it was a quality outing for the 6-foot-10 Wright, who is trying to overcome a strained left quadriceps he injured during the second day of training camp.

"It's getting better every day," Wright said, "but it's now 100 percent yet."

Wright acknowledged that it's been somewhat difficult trying to get accustomed to eight new players on the Mavs' roster. But he likes the team the Mavs have assembled.

"It's a good atmosphere," Wright said. "A lot of young guys mixed with some older guys.

"It's kind of a college atmosphere type. We're really having a good time with each other."

Coach impressed

Rick Carlisle liked what he saw from his team in Saturday's scrimmage.

"I thought it was pretty good for this kind of scrimmage," he said. "We had a good practice beforehand, and we've just got to work on getting better every day and getting acclimated to each other and getting the new guys integrated.

"The thing I'm liking is we're just getting more accustomed to how to play a flow game with a new group of guys.

"It's a daily challenge for us. We're taking incremental baby steps [and] we've got to keep pushing to get better and better.''
