MANSFIELD -- Mansfield Summit scored quickly and scored often Friday night, building a 36-0 first quarter lead before coasting to a 64-0 win over Mansfield Lake Ridge at Vernon Newsom Stadium in a District 15-4A matchup.
The Jaguars (2-4, 2-2 in 15-4A) got on the scoreboard with an unusual play early in the first quarter when receiver Derrick Styles picked up a teammate's fumble and scored from the Lake Ridge 2-yard line. The touchdown began an onslaught of five scores in the opening quarter.
Running back Daymon Smith scored next for Summit on a 27-yard run. Dayton Boling scored the 2-point conversion on a swinging gate run to give the Jaguars a 15-0 lead with a little more than five minutes into the first quarter. On Summit's next possession, quarterback Antonio Bennett hit receiver Patrick Tshituka on a 72-yard bomb for another score. Bennett would finish the first half a perfect 6 for 6 for 218 yards.
The Summit defense got into the scoring act with 3:42 to play in the first quarter when defensive end Benjamin Ashton picked up a fumble and raced 25 yards for a score.
