NORTH RICHLAND HILLS -- Police were trying to determine late Tuesday if a man found in a burning car near Benbrook Lake was connected to a fatal shooting earlier in the day nearly 30 miles away at a Chinese restaurant on Rufe Snow Drive near Northeast Loop 820.

The man, described as Asian and with severe injuries, was taken by helicopter ambulance from Holiday Park on the north side of the lake to the burn unit at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, said Terry Grisham, spokesman for the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department.

Inspector Keith Bauman, a police spokesman for North Richland Hills, said investigators were checking to see whether the man was involved with the shooting at Hunan Wok in the 5100 block of Rufe Snow Drive. He declined to elaborate on the possible connection.

The shooting occurred about 2:45 p.m. in the kitchen area of the restaurant. Two men who were Asian and in their 40s were shot with a handgun, he said.

The survivor, Bauman said, was taken to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds but appeared to be in stable condition.

Officers were searching for a single gunman and had "a pretty good idea" who they were looking for, he said. An arrest warrant was being prepared, he said. He noted that investigators believe the shootings were "isolated" and not "random."

Police faced a language barrier in interviewing witnesses at the restaurant. Neither Bauman nor Grisham had information about what kind of vehicle was found burning at the park.

"We had a fire call," Grisham said, "and upon investigation, our people saw a subject inside the car. Then it turned into a rescue call."

Grisham said he did not know the connection between the two incidents but confirmed that North Richland Hills investigators wanted the vehicle guarded and brought back to their city.

"We're just holding place," Grisham said while driving to the park. "This is their deal."
