Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admitted the obvious on Tuesday.

Although he is disappointed with the team's 2-2 record, he said the Cowboys fit the mark.

The way they have played the past three games before the bye, the record could have been worse. Two blowout losses by a combined total of 61-25 to the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears was offset by an ugly 16-10 victory against the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"We got to play better," Jones said on his radio show on KRLD/105.3 FM The Fan. "I'm disappointed that we're not putting more points on the board. I'm disappointed that we're not getting the turnovers. All of that tells me that at 2-2, we're in pretty good shape, considering the way we've played. I'm not saying we're lucky to be 2-2, but we haven't played any better than 2-2. We can play better, though. That's the good news."

Wacky NFC East

As much as the Cowboys want to beat up on themselves for their poor start, they can remain positive because they have not lost any ground in the NFC East.

The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants are in first place with 3-2 records, followed by the 2-2 Cowboys and the 2-3 Washington Redskins.

The Cowboys have an all-important division win over the Giants in the season opener.

The bottom line is there is a lot left to be decided with the majority of their division games in front of them.

"You've got to look at your division hard and keep an eye on it. We have a lot to be encouraged about where we are in our division relative to records and nobody's gaining on us here," Jerry Jones said.

"We just got to play better from within, across the board. I emphasize the interior blocking of the offensive line, but we got so many other areas that we can play better in. But that's football."

Witten's baby

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and his wife, Michelle, added a baby girl to their family Monday night.

Witten made the announcement on his radio show on KTCK/1310 AM The Ticket on Tuesday afternoon.

Witten said it worked out perfectly as the girl was born a few weeks early so he wouldn't have to miss any games or practice time. The Cowboys play four of the next five games on the road.

Mom and baby are doing fine, Witten said, as well as his sons C.J. and Cooper.

Return issues

Running back Felix Jones is getting a lot of grief for the Cowboys' struggles on kickoff returns.

The Cowboys average 21.5 yards per return and Jones had a fumble in the Seattle game.

It's one reason the Cowboys brought up former North Texas running back Lance Dunbar from the practice squad.

Coach Jason Garrett said the problems are related to the entire unit and not simply Jones.

"If you evaluate it, there are a lot of areas where we can get better," Garrett said. "... It's not been a strength for us." Clarence E. Hill Jr.
