Dallas police were hunting for a gunman who shot and wounded an off-duty police officer early Tuesday at an apartment complex.

The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. at the Wildflower Apartment complex at 6031 Pineland, where Dallas police Senior Cpl. Matthew Wagner was working an off-duty job with a police sergeant, the Dallas Police Department reported on its Facebook page.

The officers were investigating a suspicious male inside a parked vehicle when the male fired two rounds, striking Wagner twice, police said. Responding officers took Wagner to Presbyterian Hospital where he was in stable condition as of 5 a.m.

Police were searching for the suspect.

Wagner is a four-year veteran of the police department.

On the Dallas police Facebook page, a woman named Sarah Wagner wrote just after 5 a.m. "Thank you God for being next to my husband last night. Now with God, Team Wagner will recover!"
