FORT WORTH -- A motorcycle rider was killed Wednesday evening when a pickup driven by a man fleeing from police slammed into the back of the motorcycle near the intersection of Alta Mere Drive and Interstate 30, police said.

Three hours after the crash, which occurred about 6:30 p.m., debris littered the west Fort Worth intersection as officers continued to investigate.

The pickup was about to be towed away with much of the motorcycle embedded in the truck's engine compartment, Fort Worth police Lt. F.V. Gilbert said.

The incident began when a west-side patrol officer saw the pickup enter Benbrook Traffic Circle.

"He was driving recklessly, at excessive speed and he couldn't negotiate a turn," Gilbert said. "He spun out in front of the officer."

Then the truck sped north on Alta Mere (Texas 183), Gilbert said.

It slammed into the back of the motorcycle near the intersection of Alta Mere and Calmont Avenue, but the tangled wreckage continued north about 300 feet until it stopped on the overpass above I-30. The spot is southwest of Ridgmar Mall.

The pickup driver climbed out of the wreckage and tried to run, but was caught by police in the south lanes of Alta Mere, Gilbert said.

He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth where he was being treated under police guard.

Neither his name nor the name of the dead motorcycle rider was available early Thursday.
