ARLINGTON -- Neither team wanted to play a doubleheader this late in the season, so the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels waited and waited some more Saturday.

The hope was that the rain that had been falling all morning at Rangers Ballpark would relent around 5 p.m. The clubs were willing to wait until 8 or 9 if the storm would just clear out.

It never did, and the forecast said it wouldn't in a reasonable amount of time to play a major-league game. The game was finally postponed nearly four hours after the scheduled 3:05 p.m. first pitch.

The Rangers and Angels will play a split doubleheader today, with the first game starting at 12:05 p.m. and the second scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Tickets for Saturday will be honored for Game 2.

"I've never seen weather like this in Texas," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "And it doesn't look like it's going to let up."

The doubleheader could create some pitching headaches for both teams in their final series of the season as they attempt to secure postseason berths.

Their bullpens will be at full strength for the early game today as Yu Darvish faces Zack Greinke. Derek Holland and Ervin Santana, Saturday's scheduled starters, will pitch the late game as the Rangers try to move closer to their third straight American League West title.

It appeared as though they would for much of the afternoon, but second-place Oakland delivered another dramatic victory with two runs in the ninth and a three-run walk-off homer in the 10th against Seattle.

The Rangers' division lead is 2 1/2 games, and their magic number held at three. A doubleheader split will guarantee the Rangers a playoff spot, and a sweep plus an A's loss will allow them to clinch the West title in their regular-season home finale.

Washington said that he didn't watch the Oakland comeback, opting instead to have his TV tuned into a channel that showed a view of the rain-soaked field.

Four hours of that had him thinking positively about the doubleheader.

"It's going to be beneficial so that you don't have to play in that on the TV," Washington said.

As for the A's game, Washington said he had been informed of how they won. It didn't elicit much of a response.

"I have none," he said. "I'm just concerned about the Texas Rangers and the Angels."

He'll have double the concern today.
