There was a three-match stretch this season in which Burleson outside hitter Abby Seamster didn't play.
It left the Elks out of sorts on offense, but it also gave coach D'Anna Newton a chance to show her team that it needed to get better. Seamster is back in the mix, and Burleson is 22-7 and 6-0 in District 8-4A.
"Abby's been the glue that held us together," Newton said. "With her out, it fell to some others, and we're better because of it."
Burleson was forced to change its rotation and mix up different schemes during the time Seamster sat because of injury. Newton said Burleson's team chemistry has improved and that players are communicating.
That has left Seamster and middle blocker Holly Milam to do the damage on offense. Milam leads the team in kills, but Newton said defenses must account for both players.
"You can't be in two places at once," she said. "There's no doubt they get defenses confused."
Milam might lead the team in hitting categories, but Seamster knows the floor. She has the ability to mix up her hitting direction, change speeds and find the open spots.
"Watching them play while I was hurt, I could see how much better we were getting," Seamster said.
