Sen. Ted Kennedy died from brain cancer. So did movie critic Gene Siskel, Beatle George Harrison, golfer Seve Ballesteros, Reggae king Bob Marley and local wrestler Fritz Von Erich. Deaths traced to brain tumors have been on the increase during the past 25 years. These tumors often go undiagnosed for months, as unsuspecting physicians treat patients' splitting headaches with painkillers and anti-depressants.

To raise awareness locally and encourage research into the causes of brain tumors, 124 area residents have organized teams in memory or in honor of friends and relatives afflicted with brain tumors. During the 7th Annual Brain Tumor Walk in Trinity Park the morning of Sept. 29, these teams will gather at the duck pond and walk a 5K route. This walk receives next to no publicity, except through word of mouth. Yet, many of us have lost relatives and role models to brain cancer.

Who else died from brain tumors? Composer George Gershwin, Broadway singer Ethel Merman, comedian Pat Paulson and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle. To support the Brain Tumor Walk, go online to www.BrainTumorWalk.org/DFW. The cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt and a worthy cause.
