Big 12 offenses were supposed to rule the roost in 2012 and so far they've done plenty of clucking.

Nowhere was this more evident than Texas' offensive explosion at Ole Miss on Saturday. The Longhorns (3-0) ran over the Rebels for 676 yards, the second-most in school history, and won 66-31. It's the most points for Texas since beating Colorado 70-3 in the 2005 Big 12 Championship game. Mississippi hadn't allowed that many points since 1917.

"The biggest difference Saturday was down the field we made some big plays and we were very balanced," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "[Quarterback David Ash] had by far his best game."

Ash, making his ninth career start, threw for 326 yards, including touchdowns of 69, 55 and 46 yards. The Longhorns also rushed for 350 yards, marking the third time in school history and first time on the road that Texas has gained more than 300 yards passing and rushing in a game.

"It's one of the things we've been talking about, offensively we're in a scoring league," Brown said. "And good defenses give up a lot of points in this league. That's just what it is. It has been that way and it's probably more unique than anybody else in the country because just about anybody in our league can score and they can score fast. That's one of the things we couldn't do in a couple of games last year and it really hurt us."

Five of the top eight FBS scoring teams are in the Big 12. The Southeastern Conference is the only other league with at least two teams in the top 10.

Seven Big 12 teams rank in the top 24 for total offense, including four of the top eight. Oklahoma State is averaging a nation-leading 686.7 yards in three games.

Tougher test

Baylor (2-0) has its hands full headed into a Friday night game at Louisiana-Monroe on ESPN. The Warhawks (1-1) have opened the season with an overtime win at Arkansas and a 31-28 overtime loss at Auburn.

"I think they're playing with a lot of effort, attitude, and they've got a lot of confidence right now," said Bears coach Art Briles. "You hope your players are always ready. If you didn't have the amount of respect for them that you should have, it certainly helped out."

Baylor has home wins against SMU and FCS Sam Houston State.

"We have a lot of respect for Louisiana-Monroe and [quarterback Colton Browning] as a player," Briles said. "This is going to be a good atmosphere. They're doing a whiteout. I think it will help prepare us for down the road in Big 12 play."
