FORT WORTH -- A Dallas police officer who lived in south Fort Worth was killed Monday afternoon while cleaning his weapon, officials said.

Officer Christopher Pasley died "as a result of an apparent accidental discharge while cleaning his weapon at home today," said Dallas Police Chief David Brown in a news release.

According to a Fort Worth police report, the shooting was reported at 3:20 p.m. at a residence in the 1200 block of Sierra Blanca Drive. Officer Sharron Neal, a Fort Worth police spokeswoman, confirmed later that Pasley was the man who died.

Pasley joined the Dallas force in 2007 and was assigned to Central Patrol Division, according to the news release.

Brown said the department's Employee Relations Team was activated to "coordinate assistance to the family during this traumatic time."

No further information was available Monday night.
