The body of a 45-year-old Mansfield man was found Wednesday morning in Joe Pool Lake, where he had gone to train for a triathlon, police reported.

Rescue crews recovered the body of Ed Thompson shortly after 7 a.m., about 30 to 40 yards out from the Lynn Creek Park swimming area, said Detective Lyle Gensler, a Grand Prairie police spokesman.

Authorities had been searching the lake off and on since Monday night after Thompson's wife reported him missing. She told police that her husband intended to work on his swimming conditioning but didn't return by 9 p.m. Monday.

She went to the park and found Thompson's car locked, with his cellphone and wallet inside, in the parking lot near the swim beach.

Joan Hunter, a spokeswoman for the Fort Worth Transportation Authority, also known as the T, said Thompson had worked for the company for 25 years.

"He was very well-respected," she said. "He was good at what he did, he had a family, and he was physically fit. It's really sad."

Staff writer Marty Sabota contributed to this report.
