TCU was back at practice Tuesday after having two days off for the first time since camp began Aug. 6.

The extra day of rest showed in the closed practice, coach Gary Patterson said.

"The legs are back," Patterson said. "Both sides played well. [We showed] a little more accountability on defense. The defense probably had the better half of this practice."

The Horned Frogs caught a break with a less-than-typical hot August during two weeks of camp. The shorter camp has also helped to keep the team fresher.

"You don't lose your legs as fast," Patterson said.

The Frogs had a similar camp in 2009 when they had a first-week bye before playing at Virginia.

This year TCU doesn't open up until Sept. 8 against Grambling State.

Back in the fold

Linebackers Danny Heiss and Joel Hasley, both from Aledo High School, and defensive end Ross Forrest were back at practice Tuesday after missing time with injuries. Heiss and Hasley did not participate in full-contact drills but their presence is big for the defense, Gary Patterson said. Both are sophomores and should spend time playing with Kenny Cain this season.

"That was probably the biggest noticeable difference of the whole practice -- not having to talk to the linebackers," Patterson said.

He said Forrest, a senior, won't practice every day while he recovers, but having another older guy with experience helps the team.

Story official

Wide receiver Ja'Juan Story has transferred from Florida to TCU, the school announced Tuesday. Story, a four-star recruit a year ago, redshirted as a freshman at Florida. He'll have to sit out the 2012 season per NCAA transfer rules but will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Horned Frogs. Story joins a talented group of transfers that has to sit this season. Running back Aaron Green (Nebraska), defensive back David Jenkins (LSU), and receiver Josh Doctson (Wyoming) are the others.

"We have some really good players who are going to have to wait until next spring to really add to the team," Gary Patterson said. "But they give us guys who can go out and play with the 1s and 2s. As scout team guys they are going to make us better."

Story is good friends with TCU safety Jamie Byrd. Story was also recruited by TCU linebackers coach Randy Shannon when Shannon was head coach at Miami.
