Three-time Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner, a former standout at Arlington Lamar and Baylor, has a torn hamstring, NBC 5 reported Wednesday, ending his hopes of competing in the London Games.
Wariner said he thought he tore the hamstring on Friday, according to the KXAS/Channel 5 website, and that the tear was confirmed by an MRI.He was part of the U.S. team's pool for the men's 4x400-meter relay, but LaShawn Merritt, the 2008 Olympic 400 champion, dropped out of his heat race Saturday with an injured left hamstring and left for home Monday. The absence of Merritt was thought to have paved the way for Wariner, who didn't qualify for London in the 400 at the U.S. trials but was named to the relay. Wariner won the 400 in 2004 and also took gold on the 2004 and 2008 relays.Wariner, 28, was sixth in the 400 at the U.S. trials in Eugene, Ore., on June 23. He underwent knee surgeries in 2009 and 2011.
