Dallas County reports third death related to West Nile virus
A third death related to the West Nile virus has been confirmed in Dallas County.
According to Dallas County Health and Human Services, the patient lived in ZIP code 75050, the northeast part of Grand Prairie. Because of medical privacy laws, no further information was released.
The patient "was diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease and died this week," according to a news release.
In Johnson County, Cleburne health officials asked residents to report stagnant or standing water after the city's first West Nile virus case, in a 92-year-old man, was confirmed this week.
Mayor Scott Cain said a total of five West Nile cases have been reported in the county in Cleburne, Burleson and Alvarado.
The West Nile virus is carried by mosquitoes, and humans can be infected with it. Cleburne will not spray to kill the insects unless mosquitoes test positive for West Nile, he said.
In Burleson, a resident living in the northern portion of the city tested positive for the virus.
As of Thursday, Tarrant County had reported 52 cases, Denton County 26 and Dallas County 57.
