A Watauga police officer had to undergo surgery Friday morning after a two-vehicle collision Thursday night, a city spokeswoman said.

The officer's injuries were not considered life-threatening, said Marcia Reyna, a Watauga public information officer, in an e-mailed statement.

A preliminary investigation found that the crash occurred as the officer was northbound on Denton Highway, about 9:30 p.m., she said.

A female driver turned left off Main Street into the southbound lanes, colliding with the officer's car.

Both the officer and the woman were taken to hospitals by helicopter ambulance.

The officer, who was not identified, was "in good spirits," Reyna said. The female driver also was recovering.

The wreck is under investigation, she said. Police do not believe alcohol was involved.
