A Lancaster patrol officer has died after a wreck Saturday morning with a suspected drunken driver on Highway 67 at FM 2738 near Venus in Johnson County.
The Lancaster city manager confirmed to NBC5 that Officer Dustin Dodson, 25, who had been with the department since March 2010, had died Saturday night at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth as a result of his injuries. He had just completed his shift and was headed home, said City Manager Opal Mauldin Robertson.Dodson was a husband and father of three children, Robertson told NBC5."It's a tough loss for our department," she said. "Our police department is small, very close-knit. We're all family, and so it's a tragic loss for us."Venus Police officer James Robinson told The Associated Press that Ricardo Espinoza, 22, of Alvarado was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and an accident causing serious injury, which would likely be upgraded after Dodson's death.Robinson says a witness led police to Espinoza. He was being held Sunday pending formal charges.Have more to add? News tip? Tell us
