The Phoenix Suns won the amnesty auction for former Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola, ESPN reported.

Because of Scola's contract with Houston, which had $10 million in unguaranteed money in the final year of the deal, the Suns had to submit a bid of at least $3.3 million per year for Scola, and commit $10 million over three years, NBA.com reported.

Several teams, including the Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers, were believed to have submitted bids for Scola, the website said.

NBA.com said Scola was amnestied on Friday by the Rockets in order to clear more cap room for potential runs at Orlando's Dwight Howard, or to be able to take on other big contracts in potential trades if they don't get Howard.

Kidd arrested

New York Knicks point guard Jason Kidd was arrested on a drunken-driving charge after police said he crashed his SUV into a telephone pole in the Hamptons on Sunday, days after signing with the Knicks.

Treated at a hospital for minor injuries after the crash, Kidd was arraigned on a misdemeanor driving while intoxicated charge and released without bail, Southampton Town police said.

Kidd, 39, was alone in the 2010 Cadillac Escalade when it hit a pole and veered into the woods around 2 a.m. in Water Mill, police said.

Water Mill is a serene, mainly residential community east of Southampton Village.

Kidd's next court date wasn't immediate available.

The DWI charge carries the potential for up to a year in jail.

The Knicks signed Kidd away from the Dallas Mavericks this week in a deal that will pay him about $3 million a year. Kidd had played in New Jersey, leading the Nets to two NBA Finals appearances, before being traded to Dallas.

Knicks say no to Lin?

ESPN reported that two sources within the Knicks organization said that New York will not match the offer the Houston Rockets made to New York point guard Jeremy Lin.

The Knicks have repeatedly said they would match any offer for Lin, but the Rockets made it difficult with a three-year, $25 million deal that's worth about $15 million in the third year.

New York has until 10:59 p.m. on Tuesday to match the offer sheet for the restricted free agent.

A team source told ESPNNewYork.com that the third year of the Rockets' offer, worth $14.8 million, makes it unlikely the Knicks would match.

Carmelo Anthony said it's up to the Knicks to decide if they want to match the "ridiculous contract" that the Houston Rockets have offered Jeremy Lin.

It's uncertain if they will now after agreeing to a sign-and-trade deal with Portland to bring point guard Raymond Felton back to New York, after already signing Jason Kidd.

Briefly

Mavs win opener: Dominique Jones scored 32 points to spark the Dallas Mavericks' Summer League team to an 88-77 victory over Denver on Sunday in Las Vegas. Jones shot 12 of 25 from the field and added eight rebounds. Mavericks second-round draft picks Jae Crowder and Bernard James each scored nine points. First-round pick Jared Cunningham was out with a hamstring injury.

Cavaliers: Guard Kyrie Irving will have his broken right hand examined by team doctors today. Irving, the NBA's Rookie of the Year, broke his hand Saturday after slapping it on a padded wall during Summer League practice in Las Vegas.

Timberwolves: Minnesota has submitted a four-year, $46 million offer sheet for restricted free agent Nicolas Batum. The Portland Trail Blazers have three days to match the offer.
