FORT WORTH -- A magnitude-2.4 earthquake shook Johnson County Monday night and a geophysicist said it was probably an aftershock from a larger quake that hit the area a few weeks ago.
No damage was reported in the Monday night quake that was reported about 9:22 p.m. about a mile southwest of Keene and about 24 miles south of Fort Worth.The quake was the eighth in the Keene-Cleburne area in the last 30 days, according to the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo."This is probably an aftershock from the larger one that hit the Keene area," said geophysicist Jessica Turner with the geological agency.On June 24, a magnitude-3.5 quake, previously reported at 3.6, near Keene shook North Texas residents. No major damage was reported, but that quake broke windows and knocked over items.In the last 30 days, Texas has had 10 quakes, according to the USGS.The largest quake in Texas on record was Aug. 16, 1931, a magnitude-5.8 earthquake near Valentine in West Texas, according to the agency.The quake caused heavy damage in Jeff Davis and nearby counties, as well as landslides in mountains near Big Bend National Park and the Guadalupe Mountains near Carlsbad, N.M.Domingo Ramirez Jr., 817-390-7763Twitter: @mingoramirezjr.
