Nowitzki says life might come full circle with Nash, Terry

FRISCO -- Two players who have been instrumental in Dirk Nowitzki's life may be going in opposite directions.

Point guard Steve Nash is among a list of players on the Mavericks' backup plan free-agent list if they can't sign Deron Williams. And if the Mavs are able to secure Williams, that could signal the end of Jason Terry's career in Dallas.

Nash and Nowitzki were teammates with the Mavericks from 1998-2004. On Saturday, Nowitzki reminisced about what it would be like to play with Nash again.

"I texted with him a little bit," Nowitzki said. "But I think just like in the summer of 2010 when LeBron [James] was kind of the first piece of domino to fall and then everybody kind of went after that, I think it's going to be the same this year.

"I think people are going to try to pursue D-Will in our case and then once he decides where he's going, I think then you can make some other decisions -- if you go for Nash."

Nowitzki and Nash are longtime best friends. They joined the Mavs via trades on the same day -- June 24, 1998.

Nash became a free agent in the summer of 2004. But he so wanted to remain in Dallas, that when the Phoenix Suns offered him a six-year, $63 million free-agent contract, Nash angered the Suns when he went against NBA protocol and asked Mavs owner Mark Cuban if he would match that offer.

Cuban said no, and Nash went on to win the NBA's award as Most Valuable Player award in 2005 and 2006.

Speaking before the Dirk Nowitzki Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game at Dr Pepper Ballpark, Nowitzki compared the 2004 situation with Nash to what is transforming with Terry.

Nowitzki said he was concerned about Terry's future with the Mavericks.

"Especially if D-Will really comes [to the Mavericks] I don't think there will be a lot of money left, so that will be obviously disappointing [to lose Terry]," Nowitzki said. "Jet and myself and this franchise, we've been through a lot together, some great downs.

"But also obviously one of the greatest ups ever in our careers and lives with winning the [2011] championship, and he was a big part of that."

Ironically, after Nash signed that free-agent contract with the Suns in 2004, Terry was brought in to replace him. Terry, in fact, was the starting point guard when the Mavs advanced to the 2006 NBA Finals.

Now, Terry may be leaving the Mavs. And Nash may be returning.

"I never thought either me or [Terry] would wear another uniform in our careers," Nowitzki said. "But if it comes down to it, we all understand it's a business, and if it comes to it then it's going to be tough, but we've got to move on."

Nowitzki's Blue Sox squad lost to the White Sox 13-6 before a crowd of 8,500.

Carter to return

Vince Carter will be back with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks exercised their rights and picked up a team option on a contract that will pay Carter $3.12 million next season.

"They know that I want to be back," Carter said Saturday night in Frisco. "I love it here."
