Felix, Tarmoh cruise through 200-meter heats

Posted Thursday, Jun. 28, 2012

EUGENE, Ore. -- Looking so smooth and exerting little effort, Allyson Felix glided to an easy heat win in the 200 meters.

Minutes later, appearing just as smooth and expending just as little of her energy, Jeneba Tarmoh cruised to a victory in her heat at the U.S. Olympic track trials on a drizzly Thursday night.

If controversy was weighing the sprinters down, they didn't show it on the track.

Five days ago, the training partners crossed the finish line in a tie for the third and last Olympic spot in the 100.

Now, everyone is waiting to see what they will choose to break the dead heat -- a runoff, coin flip or if one of them simply gives up the spot to the other.

After the race, Felix and Tarmoh might have gotten more of a workout than on the track -- trying to make it through the media without saying a word.

Felix and Tarmoh have already said they won't announce any sort of decision until after the 200 final on Saturday.

Briefly

Women's 5,000: Julie Culley ran the women's 5,000 meters 15 minutes, 13.77 seconds for a spot on the Olympic team. Molly Huddle, the American record holder and defending champion, finished second in 15:14.40.

Steeplechase: Evan Jager won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8 minutes, 17.40 seconds. Donn Cabral was second in 8:19.81, and Kyle Alcorn finished third in 8:22.17 for the other two places on the U.S. team.

Men's pole vault: Brad Walker won his fourth U.S. pole vault title, clearing 18 feet, 7 1/4 inches.

Men's discus: Lance Brooks won with a personal best of 213 feet, 9 inches.

Men's 5,000: Galen Rupp won in 13 minutes, 22.67 seconds, a week after winning the 10,000.

Usain Bolt: Unfazed by a false start a few lanes over, Usain Bolt eased through his first qualifying heat at the Jamaican Olympic trials Thursday night, finishing the 100 meters in 10.06 seconds.

Reigning world champion Yohan Blake won his heat in 10 seconds flat -- fastest time of the night.
